Interestingly, the album also confirms a massive shift in rap's power structure. Though nearly half of the 18 tracks are by East Coast rappers, and there's a healthy sampling of Dirty South, there is virtually no West Coast rap represented anywhere on the compilation. That said, the influence of seminal California artists like N.W.A. and 2Pac echoes in the preponderance of gangsta themes, making THE SOURCE PRESENTS HIP HOP HITS VOL. 6 a fascinating glimpse of the mainstream's continuing assimilation of the hip-hop underground.
