Bring the beauty of traditional Japanese textiles to your table with this set of two coasters made from richly woven kinran brocade. Inspired by the elegance of Japanese obi and kimono fabrics, each coaster adds color, depth, and a distinctive Japanese character to everyday drinks and table settings. The front is made from kinran fabric woven in Japan. Unlike printed fabric, the design is created by intricately weaving metallic gold and silver threads together with a variety of colored yarns. This woven construction gives the fabric a sense of depth, texture, and substance, along with a refined luster that cannot be reproduced by printing. Another unique feature of kinran is the way its appearance changes with the light. The threads may shimmer brightly in a well-lit room, while softer lighting brings out deeper tones and a more subdued expression. The fabric reveals a different character depending on the viewing angle, surroundings, and time of day. SHINSENDO was founded in Japan in 1933 as a maker of traditional hanging scrolls. Through this work, we came to appreciate the beauty of kinran fabrics long used as decorative materials in Japanese scroll mounting. Wanting to bring the appeal of these traditional textiles beyond hanging scrolls and into modern daily life, we carefully select patterns and color combinations from a wide range of kinran fabrics and transform them into practical tableware. Each coaster is individually sewn and finished in Japan, with a plain black cotton fabric on the reverse side. Measuring approximately 4 × 4 inches, they are suitable for tea, coffee, sake, wine, whisky, cocktails, and many other types of drinkware. The set of two is ideal for sharing tea or drinks with someone special, enjoying an evening drink together, or welcoming a guest. They coordinate beautifully not only with Japanese tableware, but also with glassware, ceramics, and contemporary interiors, bringing the beauty of traditional Japanese textiles into both everyday and special occasions. Because each coaster is cut from a larger patterned fabric, the placement and appearance of the motif will vary from piece to piece.
