Product Information

About this item

• Handmade Porcelain Craftsmanship That Lasts: Each night light is crafted from kiln-fired porcelain that resists fading, discoloration, or damage over time. Unlike plastic lights, this ceramic body is waterproof and non-porous, making it safe for humid areas like bathrooms or kitchens. Its hand-engraved design has a timeless quality, perfect for homes that favor warm, natural decor with long-lasting functionality.
• Unique: Different thicknesses in the porcelain cause the image to appear, it is not a photograph or print, yet has such incredible detail that it's hard to believe it's from an engraving. The engraved surface gives the image a subtle three dimensioal quality, and the sepia toned color of the porcelain is soft, soothing, and peaceful.
• Gentle Glow That Soothes Without Glare: This plug-in night light emits a soft, amber-toned glow that’s perfect for nighttime navigation, but not so bright that it will glare or wake you up fully. Ideal for nurseries, bathrooms, kitchens, or hallways, it lights the space without being harsh or clinical. If you are looking for calming light or sensory-friendly lighting, you will find this night light the right balance between visibility and comfort.
• Great Gift: Elegant, durable, and unlike anything mass-produced, this night light has a unique style and grace that will be beautiful for decades! It's the kind of gift people remember—ideal for birthdays, housewarmings, weddings, or anyone into artistic lighting. High quality craftsmanship with such a timless design will impress everyone, especially for those that are hard to shop for.
• Ships complete: Comes with an easy to replace 7W incandescent bulb and a brief history of the art in an attractive and sturdy box. It's a true piece of illuminated art that you will use and enjoy every single day! Approx 3.5" wide x 5" tall.

Product Description

This is our first orignal lithophane design, from over 35 years ago, and it's still one our top sellers. The whimsical man in the moon is a lighthearted image with broad appeal, and it makes a perfect baby gift. This is a "lithophane"; a thin translucent porcelain night light, made using a lost art from the 1800's. When lit from behind, the light shining through the different thicknesses of the carving causes a highly detailed image to appear in front, almost magically. As you see, the illuminated image is so detailed, that it has a totally photographic quality to it! In addition, the relief of the carving gives the image a 3 dimensional quality when seen in person. To make them, we start by carving the image in a translucent wax, with the wax lit from behind. We then take a plaster mold of this engraving, and we then cast a fine porcelain clay into this mold. We then kiln fire the porcelain to 2300 degrees F. to achieve it's translucency and durability. Lithophanes were invented in France in 1827, and were popular throughout Europe till the early 1900's. They mysteriously faded from popularity with the advent of electricity, which is ironic as they look way better with electric light than candles. We first started making them 32 years ago by reproducing the antique ones. We eventually learned how to engrave our own originals, and this has been our specialty ever since. Our lithophanes truly make for a beautiful and practical piece of art that you will use daily for year after year.
