About this item

THE ALL-AROUND WORKHORSE — Shape 1 is the Mudtools bestseller: the classic kidney profile is large enough to cover real surface area and small enough to work tight curves and edges, so it stays within reach from first shaping through final finishing on the wheel, in handbuilding, and in sculpting.
SIGNATURE MUDTOOLS POLYMER — Made from Mudtools’ proprietary flexible polymer, this rib glides over wet clay without sticking or dragging and resists burrs. Unlike a wooden rib it becomes burnished with use rather than worn, so the finish it leaves stays consistent season after season.
SMOOTH, REFINE AND FINISH — Compress and smooth walls, refine rims, tidy transitions and lift small irregularities as you bring a piece toward its final form. At home in porcelain, stoneware and earthenware, and across ceramics from functional pots to sculpture.
FIVE COLOR-CODED FLEX GRADES — Every Shape 1 rib is the same profile in a different firmness: Pink Ultra Soft, Red Very Soft, Yellow Soft, Green Medium, Blue Firm. Choose the flex that suits your clay body and touch, or collect the range.
THIS RIB — BLUE, FIRM (B1): The firmest grade in the Shape 1 range. For moving clay with authority, crisp compression and establishing structure where a soft rib would flex away. Made in the USA.

Product Description

The Mudtools Shape 1 Rib is the all‑around workhorse you keep within reach from first shaping through finishing. Its medium, kidney‑style body hits the sweet spot for most hands and most clay projects—large enough to cover meaningful surface area, small enough to maneuver around tight curves and edges. That balance is what makes Shape 1 a perennial bestseller and a backbone tool for throwing, handbuilding, or sculpting. Built from Mudtools’ flexible polymer, Shape 1 flexes just enough to follow a form cleanly without losing control. It glides smoothly over clay, resists sticking or dragging, and tends to become burnished rather than worn over time, giving you a consistently refined finish session after session. Use it to smooth walls, refine rims, tidy transitions, or remove small irregularities as you move toward the final shape. Available in five color‑coded firmness levels—Ultra Soft, Very Soft, Soft, Medium, and Firm—so you can choose the feedback you want for your clay body, technique, or personal feel. Whether you’re working in porcelain, stoneware, or earthenware, Shape 1 delivers dependable, comfortable control for foundational shaping and everyday studio work.
