It is assigned to the 52d Operations Group, stationed at Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany. It was reactivated on 13 August 2010. Scat VII, a P-51 Mustang once flown by triple-ace fighter pilot Robin Olds, flies along an F-16C Fighting Falcon assigned to the 480th Fighter Squadron, Spangdahlem Air Base, May 28, 2019. The plane is the last one Olds flew before the end of World War II and is one of the only flying examples of the aircraft in Europe. Olds flew in both World War II and the Vietnam War, scoring a total of 16 air-to-air victories over the course of his career. (U.S. Air Force photo by Master Sgt. Roidan Carlson) History World War II Established by III Bomber Command as a B-26 Marauder training squadron. Tactical Air Command The 480th Tactical Fighter Squadron' was established in 1957 at England Air Force Base, LA, as the 480th Fighter Bomber Squadron, flying North American F-100 Super Sabres. In 1959 it was inactivated again due to budgetary reductions. Three years later it was reactivated again under United States Air Forces in Europe, flying the Republic F-84F Thunderstreak. In 1963 it was re-equipped with F-100s, but withdrawn from France upon request of French government. Vietnam War Reassigned to Hollomon AFB, New Mexico (USA), it was re-equipped with F-4C Phantom II fighters. The squadron was deployed to Da Nang Air Base, South Vietnam, in 1966 as part of USAF buildup in Southeast Asia and was engaged in combat operations, primarily over North Vietnam, from 1966 to 1971.
