• THE FOREST FLOOR, NOT THE CHRISTMAS TREE: Most pine candles are one note - cut fir, sharp and thin. This opens on Green, Incense and Pine together. Green is a perfumer's term for the smell of a broken stem, and with Incense beside it you get resin, bark and cold air rather than a wreath. Cedarwood and Fir warm the middle, Musk and Patchouli ground it in damp earth. Seven notes, three layers - a whole forest rather than a single tree. Most pine candles stop at the first one.
• JUDGE THE SCENT BEFORE YOU EVER LIGHT IT: The wooden lid seals against a silicone gasket, so the fragrance is still locked in when the box reaches you. Lift the lid and the cold throw tells you exactly what you have bought, in the first ten seconds, before a match is struck. Most candles only reveal themselves after an hour of burning and a decision you cannot undo. Keep the lid on between burns and the resin notes stay sharp to the last hour. It is the one claim here you can check on arrival.
• NEVER TRIM THIS WICK. NOT WITH ANYTHING: This is a laminated wooden wick, not cotton. Scissors, wick trimmers, nail clippers and pinching all delaminate the layers and the flame dies. If a burnt edge builds up, let the candle cool completely and break the carbon off with your fingers or a folded paper towel, leaving the wood at about an eighth of an inch. That is the whole of the maintenance. Ignore any instruction anywhere that tells you to cut it.
• THE FIRST BURN DECIDES THE OTHER FIFTY-FOUR: Wooden wicks have memory. Burn for two to three hours the first time, until melted wax reaches the glass right across the surface. Do that once and the candle keeps burning edge to edge for its whole life. Stop short and it sinks a narrow shaft and leaves wax stranded on the walls, which is the single most common reason a good candle is called a bad one. Hold the flame to the wick's long edge for fifteen seconds when lighting.
• FOUR HOURS MAXIMUM, EVERY TIME: Put it out at four hours and let it cool before relighting. A jar candle burned far beyond that heats the glass through, and heat is cumulative - the base gets hotter the longer it runs. Stop when about half an inch of wax is left rather than burning it dry. Always on a level heat-safe surface, never on a shelf under something that can catch, never unattended and never overnight. Four hours is the rule that matters most on this page.
• UP TO 55 HOURS, CERTIFIED AS A RANGE: 275 g of soy-blend wax and a hardwood wick, tested at 45 to 55 hours across a full burn under quality control. We publish the range rather than one round number because the figure you actually get depends on draft, room temperature and session length. Short frequent burns will not reach the top of it. Sessions of two to four hours in a still room will. Certified here means tested on production stock rather than on a prototype.
• SIZED HONESTLY FOR THE ROOM IT IS IN: One wooden wick, one wick's worth of throw. This is built for a bedroom, home office, hallway or reading corner of roughly 175 sq ft with the door closed and no draft. It will not carry an open-plan kitchen and living room, and we would rather say so than sell you the wrong size. For a bigger space, run two at opposite ends rather than expecting one to reach further than a single wick can. Two sources beat one struggling source every time.
• 10% FRAGRANCE OIL AND A SOY BLEND: A tenth of the jar by weight is fragrance - the practical ceiling for a soy blend, above which oil separates and pools instead of binding. The wax is a soy blend rather than a petroleum blend, which matters more with resinous notes than with sweet ones: Incense and Patchouli are heavy molecules and a cooler wooden wick carries them without scorching. Keep the wick short and the flame steady and it burns cleanly.
• THE TEAL FROSTED JAR HAS A SECOND LIFE: Deep teal frosted glass, 3.15 inches across and 4.33 inches tall, lit from within so the whole jar glows rather than the flame alone. It suits a mantelpiece, a desk, a hall table or a stack of books far better than a clear jar does. When the wax is gone, wash it out with hot soapy water and keep pens, brushes, keys or plant cuttings in it, or use it as a bud vase. Nothing here is designed to be thrown away.
