WHY THE ORDER MATTERS The sediment filter goes first and holds back the sand, silt and rust that would otherwise load the stages behind it. The carbon follows, and that stage does the work that costs you money if you skip it: chlorine reaching a thin film composite membrane shortens its service life. The polishing stage sits after the storage tank and takes off the flat, stored character water picks up sitting in a bladder tank. Each stage is there to keep load off the one behind it. Carbon run without a sediment stage ahead of it fills with grit before its adsorption capacity is used, and a system run without a carbon stage passes chlorine to the membrane. A YEAR, NOT SIX MONTHS The prefilters on these systems are a six month item and the kit that covers that service on its own is WP560038. This is the larger set, sized for a full year, so the schedule is one purchase rather than two. If your membrane is not due, the smaller set may suit you better.
