He was trained in professional brand management and took an MBA specialising in consumer behaviour. In 1990 he founded The Blue-Chip Marketing Consultancy, which became the only Scottish agency to win the coveted UK Institute of Promotional Marketing Grand Prix (twice, in 1991 and 2011), and which in 2012 was awarded a Globe in Rio de Janeiro for the World’s Best Trial and Awareness Campaign. As Creative Director he developed campaigns for over 100 national and international brands in 40 countries.In 2005 his book Does Your Marketing Sell? was published by Nicholas Brealey and translated into Chinese and Russian (and Latvian) and led to worldwide speaking engagements, from Shanghai to Kyiv (and Riga). As a member of the Chartered Institute of Marketing he wrote an advertising blog for Haymarket Publications and tutored in Creative Strategy as a Director of the Institute of Promotional Marketing.As a hobby writer of crime fiction, in 2004 he was a winner of The Scotsman/Orange Prize (North, published by Birlinn) and was subsequently longlisted for The Crime Writers’ Association Margery Allingham Prize. Encouraged by this success, he applied the classic formula – the Marketing Mix – to independent publishing, and in 2012 under the penname Bruce Beckham he released the first D.I. Skelgill novel (appropriately, Murder in Adland). The series began to flourish, notably in the USA, and within three years he was working as a full-time writer.
