A daughter can spend her whole life loving her dad and still not be the thing that saves him.Kinsey grows up believing there must be some version of daughterhood that works. As her dad’s alcoholism moves through their broken family in missed visits, rewritten stories, softened excuses, and silences everyone likes to pretend are kindness, the rules form early: stay useful, need little, be quiet, don’t upset Daddy, and maybe he’ll stay this time. She becomes the kind of daughter who watches closely, asks carefully, performs goodness, and carries the room’s discomfort as if easing it were part of loving him. She learns how to read what no one will name, mistaking her dad’s distance for a problem within her reach, as if it’s something only she can fix.Across childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, that training shapeshifts. It becomes escape and self-blame. It becomes records and receipts and unsent truths. It becomes the question that won’t shut up just because the person she wants to ask is gone. What if I’d done more?I Wore the Names: What Was Never Mine to Carry is a literary memoir about addiction, family silence, inherited blame, the names daughters learn to answer to, and the work of separating responsibility from love. This story doesn’t stitch grief onto a throw pillow and call that wisdom. It arrives at a harder recognition: a daughter is not a treatment plan. For anyone who has ever loved an addict, accepted blame that wasn’t theirs, or mistaken love for power, this memoir is for you.If letting go feels like betrayal, maybe that’s because someone taught her true blue love was supposed to be carried until it broke her. It didn’t. But it did teach her what was never hers to carry.___________________________________________________________________________________________________Kinsey has spent the past two years writing publicly about grief, addiction, and complicated family histories at kinseykeys.com, where early reflections from this memoir first found readers.
