The Significance of Saint Rachel This wonderful icon has been created with the technique of lithography with gold tones and double varnish to ensure waterproof and duration in time. The creator of this icon has learned the canonization of iconography in workshops of the Monasteries of Mount Athos, where he was taught both the technique of lithography and the process of handmade artificial ageing. Rachel (Hebrew: רָחֵל‎, romanized: Rāḥēl, lit. 'ewe')[3] was a Biblical figure, the favorite of Jacob's two wives, and the mother of Joseph and Benjamin, two of the twelve progenitors of the tribes of Israel. Rachel's father was Laban. Her older sister was Leah, Jacob's first wife; their mother was Adinah.[4] Her aunt Rebecca was Jacob's mother.[5] Rachel was a Jewish matriarch found in the Old Testament. She and her husband battled through an array of trials and tribulations before they were finally blessed with children. She gave birth to Joseph, of the coat of many colors, and Benjamin, both of whom became saints as well. The story of Rachel begins when Jacob traveled to his kinsman, Laban’s, home. He fell in love with Rachel and agreed to the terms of marriage set forth by Laban. He worked for Laban for seven years in order to have permission to wed. One the night of the wedding, Jacob was deceived by Laban, instead giving him Leah, the older daughter, to marry. He then worked another seven years to be able to marry Rachel. St Rachel’s feast day is November 1.
