This is the bench, seen from directly above, before anything has been done. A scalpel, a curved needle, a spool of thread, a coil of wire and a loose handful of tow, laid out in the order a mounter reaches for them. No animal, no finished piece, no drama. People outside the craft imagine taxidermy as a moment of arrangement, a pose chosen and fixed. The people who do it know it is mostly construction. The skin is the last layer. Underneath sits a body the mounter builds himself, wound from tow over a wire armature, filed and shaved and measured against the original until the shoulder sits at the right angle and the neck carries the head without help. If that form is wrong, no amount of finishing will rescue it, and every mounter has a shelf somewhere holding the piece that taught him this. The tools in this drawing are the ones that do that work. They are unglamorous, cheap to replace, and completely unforgiving of hurry. Anyone who has spent a winter learning to wind a neck properly will recognise the layout immediately. Drawn as a clean flat graphic with no clutter, it works as a gift for a working taxidermist, an apprentice starting a first bird, a museum preparator, or a hunter who has decided to stop paying somebody else to do his own mounts and has just bought his first set of tools.
