The Crazy Box: British Television Comedy's Golden Era 1960 to 1980 (The Golden Years of British Comedy on Radio, TV and Film)

Product Description

Television comedy did not simply appear fully formed. It evolved from the crackling airwaves of radio, the traditions of music hall, and the quick wit of stage performers who had been making audiences laugh for generations. By the 1960s, a new medium had entered almost every British home: the television set. What followed was a remarkable twenty years that would produce some of the most beloved and influential comedy ever broadcast. This book explores that golden era of British television humour, from the early transition of radio comedians to television through to the great sitcom boom of the 1970s. Along the way we meet unforgettable characters: the bumbling Home Guard of Dad’s Army, the bickering father and son of Steptoe and Son, the chaotic guests of Fawlty Towers, the rebellious absurdity of Monty Python, and the cunning prison philosopher Fletcher in Porridge.Behind the laughter lay something deeper. These programmes reflected a Britain that was changing rapidly—socially, culturally, and politically. Class divisions, generational conflict, workplace frustrations, and even the absurdities of authority all found their way into the nation’s living rooms, usually accompanied by a studio audience laughing in recognition.Written with affection for the performers, writers, and producers who shaped the era, this companion volume to Mad Waves traces how British comedy moved from radio to television and went on to influence generations of comedians around the world. For anyone who remembers the warm glow of the television set—or simply wants to understand why these shows still make us laugh today—this is a journey back to the golden age of British television comedy
