Product Description

Claire Brennan, thirty-three, from Boston, is on evening shift at a small kedai in Bandung. The city becomes ordinary: glasses, a small wage, a market, a mild fever, a fight with Nia about translating too much. The yellow gate is still locked. Bu Siti has not taken her there yet.Into Indonesian 3: Evening Shift is a graded reader, not a phrasebook and not a class. Ten chapters, one continuous story. New words come from a pedagogical frequency list and are bolded on first use. Each chapter is a little harder than the last. Chapter 1 is about fifty-eight percent Indonesian. Chapter 10 is about seventy. Indonesian verbs do not conjugate. The grammar notes cover sedang, akan / nanti, pernah, ber- as whole words, di- once with oleh, body and a mild fever, lebih / paling with taste, kasih / minta, same and different, and work at a stall and a market. Each chapter has the same shape: a short briefing, the story, a new-words table with a phonetic crutch on hard words only (no tones: Indonesian has none), one grammar move, six lines to say out loud, five comprehension questions in Indonesian with English answers, and a look-back.This book will not make you fluent. When you finish, you can follow this stretch of story and say the chapter lines. Then you open Book 4. It is for English speakers starting Indonesian, or moving from a phrasebook into actual pages.
