Starr enters the Connecticut correctional system a young man already written off by the world around him, and he leaves it six years later carrying a new name and a manuscript he built one stolen page at a time. Birdcage follows him across three movements. In prison, a composition notebook becomes the only door nobody can lock, and the friendships he forges with his cellmate Rico, the towering and devout Big Neck, the culinary instructor Chef Alvarez, and the prison librarian Ms. Denise give him the discipline, craft, and quiet conviction he will need on the outside.Once he walks free, Starr returns to a New Britain that only half remembers him. He self publishes his prison manuscript, Two Sides of Game, and turns an empty Main Street storefront into a bookstore built from nothing but a plan and a name people are starting to say with respect instead of pity. The book finds its truest readers inside the very facilities Starr left behind, carried hand to hand by mothers and cousins the way scripture gets passed down a pew. What begins as a bookstore becomes a movement. Starr founds Write to Rise, a literacy and writing program for young people, helps launch HAT Force, a task force advocating for New Britain's homeless population, and eventually teaches literacy through the LEAD program. Pushed by the very community he has spent years serving, he runs for city council on the strength of his record rather than in spite of it, and wins. Birdcage closes with Starr holding his original prison notebook beside his certificate of election, a full circle built by a man who kept insisting his story could end somewhere entirely different from where it started.
