The Hognose Arid Bioactive Kit provides a dry-tolerant cleanup crew and substrate sized for a burrowing snake enclosure. Robust Milkback isopods handle an arid setup where humidity-dependent species would struggle. It includes 17 qt bioactive substrate, 2 qt hardwood leaf litter, 2 qt New Zealand sphagnum moss, a 2-piece charcoal Iso-Chunk hide, 3 oz calcium supplement, 15 Milkback isopods (Porcellio laevis), and an 8 oz springtail culture. The bioactive substrate is a blend of woodchips, charcoal, New Zealand sphagnum, peat, sand, and limestone calcium. How to set it up: Recommended minimum enclosure: 4x2x1 or larger. Lay 3-4 inches of the substrate for burrowing and keep the main substrate dry. Scatter the leaf litter on top and place the charcoal Iso-Chunk hide on the surface. Use the sphagnum moss in a shed box only, dampening just that box. Dust feeders with the calcium supplement. Keep the enclosure arid with one humid retreat, and do not mist the open substrate. Release the Milkback isopods and springtails into the shed box and litter where they can stay moist. Let it establish for about 2-4 weeks before relying on the cleanup crew.
