What is a life well-lived? What is the purpose of friendship? How does one approach death? What is the immigrant experience? How does one cope with illness? All these questions and more are evaluated through the lens of my bond with my mother. Through our journey and my relationship with my mother, we delve into issues that we all face in some form or another and hopefully create questions that will make all readers ponder and contemplate their own lives. My book dissects the idea that who we are as people is as much a product of our experiences as whose personality we carry with us. We are a continuum of someone else in more ways than we realize. The novel begins with my life in India with my mother and subsequent emigration to America. Through these experiences, I talk about what the American dream actually means and whether we truly understand the sacrifices required to achieve it. I then narrate our early days in America before moving towards my journey as a physician and how my life as a doctor intersected with my mother’s cancer diagnosis. The arc of our story will allow the reader to truly evaluate their own existence and relationships in a way they may never have done before. Read more
