Once regarded as a great pitcher with borderline major league material, Stan Musial permanently injured his throwing shoulder in the minors while playing as an emergency outfielder. It was a blessing in disguise. Musial thought his career was over, but his manager Dickey Kerr advised him to give hitting and outfield a shot. Musial had a solid background as an offensive player growing up but he did not know if he could cut it against professionals in that way, as opposed to using his pitching skills. But he shined when he was put in the lineup, hitting .342 as a part-time outfielder in 1940. When he was called up to play left field for the St. Louis Cardinals at the end of the 1941 season, Musial hit .426. From there, his career only took off. From 1942 until 1958, Musial did not hit below .310 once! He won an incredible seven batting titles. Over his 22-year career, Musial won the Most Valuable Player Award three times, a feat that has been topped by only one player in history (Barry Bonds). He is also the only player in MLB history to finish in the top two for MVP in six out of eight seasons. To no one’s surprise, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame on the first ballot.
