The Tropical Tarantula Bioactive Kit provides a small, gentle cleanup crew and substrate sized for a tarantula enclosure. Tiny Dwarf White isopods and springtails feed on decaying plant matter, mold, and organic debris as part of a balanced substrate ecosystem, and stay unobtrusive around a molting spider. It includes 7 qt bioactive substrate, 2 qt hardwood leaf litter, 2 qt New Zealand sphagnum moss, a 2-piece charcoal Iso-Chunk hide, 15 Dwarf White isopods (Trichorhina tomentosa), and an 8 oz springtail culture. The bioactive substrate is a blend of woodchips, charcoal, New Zealand sphagnum, peat, and sand. How to set it up: Recommended minimum enclosure: 12x12x12 (adjust to the species and its web or burrow habit). Lay 2-3 inches of substrate. Add the leaf litter, tuck the sphagnum moss into a corner, and place the charcoal Iso-Chunk hide on the surface as a starter retreat. Keep humidity moderate-high by dampening one side and misting a corner, and leave the rest to dry so it never stays soggy. Release the Dwarf White isopods and springtails into the moist litter and moss. No calcium supplement is included, which suits invertebrate setups. Let the enclosure establish for about 2-4 weeks before relying on the cleanup crew.
